No team is ever expecting for the worst-case scenario to actually happen at the quarterback position, but they all know it can.

We saw it happen to the San Francisco 49ers during the NFC Championship, which saw them trot out an injured Brock Purdy to give the illusion they were going to throw. Their problem? They didn't have an extra quarterback on the roster that was able to play.

The Atlanta Falcons won't let that happen to them in 2023, being that they decided to keep Logan Woodside as their third quarterback.

The pickup off of the Tennessee Titans' practice squad proved himself during the preseason, and impressed head coach Arthur Smith enough to make the 53-man roster.

"Everyone has different philosophies," Smith said. "That spot is, if you want to address with a quarterback, that gives you 49 on gameday, but you only use it if there’s a situation where he has to come in the game. You may need it, you may not."

In an otherwise poor performance for the Falcons in the team's preseason finale against the Pittsburgh Steelers, Woodside kept his composure and finished the game as one of the few bright spots as he completed 24 of his 31 passes for 196 yards.

Woodside will be behind Desmond Ridder and Taylor Heinicke on the depth chart, and chances are he won't be needed. However, one thing we can say about the Falcons is that they will have a capable quarterback if needed ... in the event of the aforementioned worst case scenario.
