Drake got rejected by Victor Wembanyama after denying access to 19-year-old’s teammates
Petre Thomas-USA TODAY Sports

Victor Wembanyama has shown exceptional leadership and maturity on the court, extending it off-court with a recent revelation.

He declined an invitation from global artist Drake to join him on stage during one of his concerts, as narrated by JJ Redick in an interview with Carmelo Anthony on his podcast 7 PM in Brooklyn.

While it’s not every day you get a chance to join an artist as big as Drake on the stage, most people rush to the opportunity. However, Victor Wembanyama chose loyalty to his teammates over being on stage with the Canadian superstar.

There was a Drake concert in Austin and he got asked to come up on stage because Drake was doing that with a bunch of NBA guys this offseason. And Wemby was like, 'Can my teammates come up on stage with me? Because they are going to be at the concert with me.' And Drake’s camp was like, 'No.' And he’s like, 'Then I don’t want to do it' … What 19-year-old kid doesn’t want to go up on stage with Drake? JJ Redick said

Wemby’s act showed the kind of person he is: humble and modest, not about the lifestyle and glamour that come with being the best rookie in recent years. And it seemed easy for the tentative Rookie of the Year to choose his teammates over Drake.

This season has really been mind-blowing for the rookie, who exceeded all expectations laid before him. And with the right attitude, the youngster can only improve.

JJ Redick likens Wembanyama to legends Tim Duncan and Steph Curry

JJ Redick , still on Carmelo Anthony’s 7 PM in Brooklyn podcast, asserted that Victor Wembanyama belongs to what he termed a rare breed of low-maintenance NBA stars, just like Golden State Warriors’s star guard Steph Curry and San Antonio Spurs legend Tim Duncan.

There's been anomalies for star players in that they have been low maintenance. There's like Steph, and there's like Tim Duncan. Wemby is one of those guys. That, to me, is as impressive as anything he does on the court. JJ Redick said

Furthermore, he said he was particularly impressed with his humility and unselfishness despite the star-following that has followed him ever since. Also, as everyone has been saying, Redick acknowledged that Wemby had totally exceeded his expectations.

However, Wemby’s season didn’t result in significant wins as his Spurs team was terrible, with a 22-60 record. But that hasn’t stopped the praises from coming his way.
