Blues Sign Wellwood?

Nearly two weeks after signing a free agent forward only to lose him to another club via waivers, the St. Louis Blues are trying again, this time with former Vancouver Canucks forward Kyle Wellwood.
It's been reported the Blues signed Wellwood to a one-year contract but because he played in Russia's KHL this season he'll have to pass through waivers before he can join the club.
Blues general manager Doug Armstrong attempted the same tactic with former Colorado Avalanche winger Marek Svatos only to see the Nashville Predators pluck him off the waiver wire. Armstrong will likely be crossing his fingers in hopes Wellwood will go unclaimed.
The natural assumption would be that Wellwood, who was released by his KHL team this season and had five NHL seasons where his conditioning was more newsworthy than his play, will probably clear waivers, but of course the same assumption was made about Svatos.
Last season Wellwood had 25 points in 75 regular season game and 7 points in 12 playoff games with the Canucks. This season with Mytishchi Atlant of the KHL he had only 8 points in 25 games, resulting in his recent release by that club.
Injuries to forwards Andy McDonald, T.J. Oshie and David Perron have hurt the Blues offensive game, forcing Armstrong to shop around for help. The fact he's tried to sign Svatos and now Wellwood not only indicates what little affordable talent is currently available on the trade market but also Armstrong's unwillingness to part with young players, prospects or picks.
This could be Wellwood's last best chance to salvage his NHL career. A strong performance with the Blues could result in another NHL contract for next season either with the Blues or another team.
**UPDATE** Shortly after this was initially reported the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported Blues GM Doug Armstrong denied signing Wellwood, saying the team "had some interest" in him but hadn't signed him "or anything like that yet".
We'll find out hopefully soon if Wellwood is indeed signed by St. Louis.
